Recently in AIS we have been discussing large corporations and the way at the grocery store when theres are a hundred different cereals in the breakfast aisle but really only three major corporations own them. I just think its sad that no small buisness's can really stay succesful anymore when all these corporations put products out in higher quanities, faster service, and lower prices. I mean how is a small family-owned business to survive. I mean when competition is so high and no one can keep up and even generics can't become needed anymore. I mean there are way too many choices for one person. For example my mom sent me to walgreens to get some toothpaste and when I got to this huge aisle of toothepaste i did not know which to pick. I mean I could opt for stronger enamal, whitening, or fresh taste but really they all work in the same way and really dont do that much. Also with shampoo and conditioner theres all these different variations and you see all these shampoo comercials that just are so cheesy and all saying like "oh if you use this shampoo and conditioner you'll become popular and beautiful." I mean in the end its all really the placebo affect where everyones brains syke them out like vitamin water, be relaxed, be focused, be energetic i mean really flavored and colored water cannot really make you more focused or relaxed. I mean the small business's also like this one street shermer in evanston used to have all these little stores that you couldnt find anywhere else and all thats left now is this one really old flower shop and a bookstore in a alley. I mean everything is big corporations or new stores that will porbably just close in a year. I mean what is the world coming to where all the stores left in 15 years are Starbucks and Walgreens.

It's funny because today I was watching tv and turned to MTV, and Gossip Girls was on, a recent popular show based off the series Gossip Girls by Cecily von Regesvalr( personally one of my favorite series, ha!) BUt it usually is just on Wednesdays on my channel 9 a small television program I think WBN. At first, when I saw a comercial of the whso before it came out I had never heard of the channel. Today, MTV was playing all the episodes, all day! I couldnt believe it! MTV must of bought the show out to play on there tv another example of a big organization taking over a small program.
And I was happy about it because I know MTV will play it more! WHICH IS AWFUL OF ME!
Mark,
I totally agree with the fact that even though it seems as though we have so many optins to choose from, we really don't have a lot at all. I liked the example of toothpaste and I really think that your idea can apply to anything. Elizabeth also makes a good point. Sure we have tons of channels on T.V. but isn't it strange when you see huge channels airing shows that you could have seen on a local station? I don't think it's bad to take advantage of some monopolys but I think that we also have to look out for the smaller businesses becuase who knows what will happen to them in a few years.
You had a lot of really strong points, Mark. I totally agree. I'm not a huge fan of the whole mainstream thing, and I think its present in sooo many different aspects of our lives. Take music for example. How many different rappers are there that honestly, all have almost the exact same (bad) lyrics, and heavy bass line? And if you look into it more, they are all on the same record label, or sister-labels. I think people are being forced to be a certain way, buying certain brands, believing in certain groups. And when we do that we are forgetting that we really do have options.
I think you bring up a lot of good points Mark. Your example of how are world may turn into just Starbucks is already so evident. No matter where you go, on every street corner there is a Starbucks. It seems so ridiculous. I find it really interesting though that certain companies own ,ultiple things with different namings. It really does trick the consumer, which is weird to think.
